Initially there will be 3 Hot Spot areas in downtown Rockford and 1 Hot Spot at the EIGERlab micro-manufacturing facility, just north of downtown Rockford . Each of these Hot Spots will cover approximately 4 city blocks. These Hot Spots are similar to what people may have used in coffee shops and restaurants, utilizing the IEEE 802.11b standard. Users will be able to sign up for service by the day, month, or year and use their wireless equipped PC's, PDA's, or any 802.11b ready device. The longer the term, the greater the savings! One key advantage to signing up as a ROC-net Hot Spot user is that user accounts are good at any ROC-net Hot Spot which is especially valuable as the system grows throughout ten counties in Northern Illinois!

Is there a charge for internet access?
Yes, there is a charge to access the network. The prices are listed below. Please contact us for multi licensing pricing, 1-877-527-5762 . Note that either signing up for a longer term or purchasing additional licenses will reduce the cost.

Q: Is the network secure?
A: The ROC-net Wireless Hot Spots are as secure as any open public access network. There are measures you can take to maximize your security such as making sure you are on an SSL-encrypted web page prior to sending or receiving confidential information, or by setting up a VPN connection to a trusted network.

Q: Do I need any special equipment to access the ROC- net wireless network?
A: All you need is a wireless equipped PC, PDA, or any other device that complies with the IEEE 802.11b standard and uses a standard Internet browser. If you are a MAC user you will need an Airport card or other 802.11b compatible wireless card.

Q: What connection speeds can I expect?
A: Depending on your proximity to the wireless tower, speeds will be anywhere from 1 to 11 Meg.  

Q: How do I connect?
A: If you are in a ROC-net Hot Spot, your wireless device should see the ROC-net Wireless signal and inform you of its presence. Tell your wireless device to connect to the “ROC-net Wireless” network and open your Internet browser. You will be redirected from your normal home page to a ROC-net authentication page. From here you will enter your username and password if already signed up or you can click the “Sign Me Up!” icon. Credit Cards will be accepted over SSL to insure your security.
